Exam management in practice
Background
The International Group of Protection and Indemnity Clubs (IGP&I) is a not-for-profit membership organisation with thirteen principal underwriting member clubs, providing liability cover (protection and indemnity) for approximately 90% of the world’s ocean-going tonnage.
The Issue
Before Coracle was engaged, there were no standardised learning and development resources to help staff grow their knowledge of the P&I and marine insurance business. Instead, individual clubs maintained their own study programmes. This led to inconsistencies and was problematic when staff moved from one club to another. The IGP&I therefore commissioned Coracle to design and develop a dedicated learning portal.
The shipping sector is undergoing significant change; new learning and development tools need to allow flexibility and scalability. They also need to be accessible, accredited and appealing to a broad audience.
The Solution
To tackle these issues, the IPG&I commissioned Coracle to provide their learning management system - www.pandiq.com
Coracle worked with IGP&I’s Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to build, from scratch, a dedicated learning portal with a modular programme that would be approved and accredited by The Chartered Insurance Institute (CII), whilst also forming a standalone qualification.
Coracle manage the entire examination process including:
- registering a candidate on pandiq.com
- opening relevant course content (online and kindle optimised versions),
- managing exam bookings for bi-annual exams held in London, Singapore, Hong Kong, Newcastle, New York and Athens
- processing and sending exam results and certificates
- notifying CII of successful candidates in order that they get the appropriate credit.
The Outcome
Commenting on the Coracle’s work and the new learning portal, John Mace, IGP&I said:
“Coracle’s refreshing and creative team brought new ideas and excellent technical know-how to this project. Their work in designing and developing PANDIQ has given us a suite of standardized learning resources which has transformed our provision of training and development and added credibility to the sector.”
Developments
Cambridge based Coracle Online (www.coracleonline.com), a privately owned, investor backed EdTech company, is delighted to confirm that their white-label platform (Osprey-VLE) underpins the announcement by The International Group of Protection and Indemnity Clubs (IG) that its professional qualification programme, the P&I Qualification (P&IQ), is to be opened to all listed Group Protection and Indemnity (P&I) correspondents. P&IQ is the only professional qualification available specifically for the P&I industry. With the help of Coracle’s exam management services, more than 1,000 P&IQ exams have been sat by Club employees to date. As from October 2017, Coracle will be glad to be rolling our the system to the Group Correspondents, as well continuing to support the Clubs. Coracle founder and former shipbroker, James Tweed, commented, “Coracle have been supporting learners from over 70 countries in the maritime field for the past decade. P&I is a complex area of marine insurance, requiring those involved to have a detailed understanding of both the maritime industry and the particulars of P&I cover and risks. We are pleased to be part of the process of extending the accessibility of this qualification to the global network of correspondents.”
